2004-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Bearing the primary DDR designation for the 2004-D Lincoln Memorial Cent, DDR-001 shows medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the dots flanking the motto — the small decorative dots that bookend the inscription on the Memorial Cent reverse. The dots provide an especially useful diagnostic element, as their small size and circular geometry make even moderate displacement immediately apparent as an elongated or doubled dot rather than a clean circle. Cataloged as UVC-2493 with DMR-002, the variety has been documented at Stage A in early die state on both the obverse and reverse, with mid-die and late die states remaining unconfirmed. The 2004-D Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at Denver in copper-plated zinc, during one of the final years of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse design that would be replaced by the four bicentennial reverses in 2009. Medium spread across the motto and its flanking dots offers collectors a variety where doubling can be confirmed through multiple design elements clustered in the same zone of the reverse.
