2003-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

A bar-like extension running from the hand to the shin area to the right of the statue on the seventh column of the Lincoln Memorial defines this Wexler Team attribution on the 2003-D cent. Catalogued as Wexler Variety ID 2003-D 1¢ WDDR-002, the variety is confirmed by a reliable set of die markers. On the obverse, two long die gouges appear above the B in LIBERTY; a die gouge sits right of the bottom of the I in IN; a die gouge appears far above the 00 in the date; and a die gouge is located above the right side of the last 0. On the reverse, a die gouge appears near the rim far below the right end of the Memorial; a small die gouge marks the lower 11th bay; a small die gouge sits below the right side of the R in AMERICA; and a small die gouge is found inside the first U in PLURIBUS. Doubled die reverse varieties arise when the die receives successive impressions from the hub at slightly different positions, permanently recording the offset. The 2003-D cent is copper-plated zinc, struck at Denver. Collectors should examine the seventh-column zone under magnification and cross-check the listed die gouges to confirm attribution.
