Description

The 2002 (S) Proof Louisiana State Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The U.S. Mint produced 3.0 million examples, making this ranked 6th of 20 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. The reverse features the brown pelican (state bird), an outline of the Louisiana Purchase territory, and a trumpet, with the inscription "Louisiana Purchase." The design honors both the 1803 land acquisition that doubled the size of the United States and Louisiana's jazz tradition. Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana, and Mississippi. Strong collector participation continued. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins.
