Description

The 2001 (P) Proof Capitol Visitor Dollar is a proof commemorative dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 143,793 examples. Part of a three-coin program to raise funds for the Capitol Visitor Center, which opened in 2008. The obverse features the original Capitol building in the foreground with the present Capitol in the background, showing the evolution of the building, while the reverse displays a contemporary interpretation of the U.S. bald eagle wrapped in a banner reading 'U.S. Capitol Visitor Center'. Designed by Elizabeth Jones. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #99791. The Capitol Visitor Center dollar's before-and-after Capitol design effectively illustrates the building's dramatic transformation over two centuries.
