2001 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
ErrorDescription
Among the more visually striking doubled dies cataloged for 2001 Lincoln Memorial Cents, WDDR-006 displays doubling on the lower right side of the 6th Memorial column, with an extra leg visible between the seated Lincoln statue's lower legs extending below the feet. The phantom leg image demonstrates how hub displacement can create anatomical ghost images when fine figurative details are even slightly offset between hubbing passes. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 2001 1-cent WDDR-006 with no other known cross-references, the reverse die marker is a die gouge inside the upper O of ONE. No significant obverse markers were noted. The extra-leg effect is comparable in visual impact to doubled die varieties that show extra fingers, extra columns, or extra letters — doubling locations where the offset creates a recognizable duplicate of a specific design element rather than merely thickening an existing feature. As the sixth documented WDDR for 2001, this variety appeared early enough in the catalog sequence to suggest it was among the first discoveries for that date. The Lincoln Memorial's seated statue of Lincoln, reproduced at tiny scale on the cent reverse, is rendered with enough anatomical precision that leg displacement becomes distinctly identifiable, making such varieties popular targets for cherry-pickers searching circulation finds and mint-sealed rolls.
