2001 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-026
Error
Description
Medium spread directed westward on this 2001 Lincoln Memorial cent DDR-026 generates a dramatic visual effect: an extra column number 7 spans from the statue's hand to its knee, and an additional set of knees appears above the normal knee position within the Memorial's interior. VarietyVista assigned this die pair UVC-3271 with die markers reference DMR-028, tracking a three-stage progression. Stage A captures both the reverse and obverse at early die state, representing the freshest impressions from this die pair before cumulative striking wear begins to degrade the finer details. Stages B and C at mid and late die state remain unconfirmed, suggesting either that the die was retired before significant deterioration or that examples from later stages have not yet been reported. The westward spread direction means the doubled image displaces to the left (from the viewer's perspective), pushing architectural elements like column lines and the seated Lincoln figure into positions that create ghost-like duplicates of the original features. Column 7, counted from left to right within the Memorial colonnade, sits in a zone where the interaction between the statue and the surrounding architecture provides multiple fine details that amplify the visibility of even moderate hub doubling. Philadelphia struck 4.959 billion cents in 2001, yet DDR-026 represents output from a single die pair within that vast production. The extra-knee diagnostic is particularly useful for rapid field identification, as it creates an anatomical impossibility that immediately signals hub doubling rather than strike doubling or machine damage.
