2001 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-025
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-3270 and DMR-027 across three recognized die stages, this 2001 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse shows a medium spread to the southwest manifesting as an extra column at position seven, visible from the elbow to the shin of the Lincoln statue. An extra knee also appears between the statue's knees — a diagnostic feature that results from the doubled hub impression creating a ghost image of the seated figure's lower body. Column and statue doubling on the Lincoln Memorial reverse is particularly desirable because the architectural elements provide clear reference geometry against which the secondary impression is easily measured. Frank Gasparro's reverse design, featuring twelve columns and the small seated Lincoln, served as the cent's standard reverse from 1959 through 2008. Three die stages indicate progressive die deterioration during this die's service life. The 2001 Philadelphia cent saw substantial production volume, and DDR-025 reflects the depth of doubled die research conducted across the Memorial cent era, where the columned facade offered numerous opportunities for visible hub doubling.
