2001 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-023
Error
Description
Contrasting with DDR-021 from the same date, this twenty-third doubled die reverse for the 2001 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent displays a strong southeast spread rather than northeast, creating an extra column number 6 visible from knee to foot and an extra set of knees east of the upper legs on the Lincoln statue. The different doubling direction between DDR-021 and DDR-023 means each variety was produced by a separate die with its own unique hub misalignment, and the distinct areas of visible doubling make them independently identifiable. Extra Memorial column varieties on Frank Gasparro's reverse design create recognizable architectural anomalies that collectors find particularly appealing. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-3268 and DMR-025, die stages include Stage A at early die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). Twenty-three DDRs for a single date confirms the extraordinary depth of doubled die research on early 2000s Memorial Cents, with many varieties distinguished by the direction and magnitude of their spread across the Memorial's columns and statue.
