2001 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-018

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-3263 / DMR-020, the 2001 DDR-018 Lincoln Memorial cent displays medium spread to the east, producing an extra column #6 visible from the knee to the foot of the Lincoln statue within the Memorial. Frank Gasparro's reverse design, in use from 1959 through 2008, renders the Memorial's twelve columns in fine relief — making even moderate hub misalignment readily apparent as a secondary "ghost" column alongside the original. This die was confirmed at Mid-Die State (Stage B), indicating it saw moderate service before examination. Eastward spread on the inner columns is a recurring doubling pattern on Memorial cent reverses, as the close spacing of columns amplifies any lateral hub shift. The knee-to-foot extent of this extra column means the doubling affects only the lower portion, distinguishing DDR-018 from varieties where the ghost column spans the full height of the statue. Philadelphia struck over 4.9 billion cents in 2001, but die-specific doubled reverses remain scarce relative to the enormous mintage.
