2001 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista with internal tracking code UVC-2937 and die marriage reference DMR-009, this 2001 Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits a medium spread east-northeast manifesting as an extra column number 6 and an extra knee visible above and between the legs of the seated Lincoln statue. The directional specificity of "east-northeast" indicates the hub displacement vector was angled slightly north of due east, creating the doubled column and knee effects at positions consistent with that diagonal offset direction. Die stage documentation records three states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with a die chip on column number 2 at early-to-mid die state plus a die crack from the upper portions of columns 2 and 3 with the obverse at EMDS, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The die chip on column 2 and the die crack spanning columns 2 and 3 document structural deterioration in the central colonnade area of the Memorial reverse — the same architectural zone where the doubling manifests on column 6 — suggesting this region of the die experienced concentrated stress during production. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was designed by Frank Gasparro for the reverse and Victor David Brenner for the obverse, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter.
