1999-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
First in the documented sequence of doubled die reverses for the 1999 San Francisco proof Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-001 records a Class VIII hub misalignment during die production that transferred visible doubling onto the reverse design. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements — conditions under which die doubling can be easier to detect than on business strikes. The 1999-S proof cent carries Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse in its penultimate decade of production before the design ended in 2008. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-VIII, the Class VIII designation indicates tilted hub doubling, where the hub was angled slightly during die production to create a rotational spread. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1999-S 1¢ Pr WDDR-001, the "Pr" notation confirms the proof status. As the first DDR for this proof date, it establishes the baseline entry in what would become a longer catalog as more proof specimens were examined by variety specialists over the following decades.
