Description

Appearing in the inaugural year of the 50 State Quarters program, SKH-25c-1999P-01(NJ) documents a spiked head variety on the 1999-P New Jersey quarter — the third state design released alongside Delaware and Pennsylvania. The New Jersey reverse depicts General Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas night 1776, one of five designs that introduced millions of Americans to collectible circulating coinage. Spiked heads on quarters are less frequently encountered than on cents because the larger die face distributes striking forces over a broader area, and Washington's moderate-relief portrait concentrates less stress at the crown compared to Lincoln's higher-relief bust on the cent. Nevertheless, die gouges and metal displacement near Washington's head can produce the characteristic raised spike projecting from the portrait. Philadelphia Mint production.
