1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-031

Description

Thirty-first cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1999 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-031 displays a slanted bar extending from the bottom of the statue's hand to the middle of its leg, positioned to the left of the statue standing within the sixth column of the Lincoln Memorial. This form of doubling creates an extra linear element that appears as a bar-like extension in the fine detail of the Memorial's interior, a region where even minor hub displacement becomes visible due to the intricate architectural engraving. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. The reverse carries multiple diagnostic features: two die chips within the lower U of UNITED, a die chip touching the lower left side of that same U, a die chip below the left side of the first S of STATES, a die chip on the left memorial base, and another die chip to the left of the memorial base. Cross-referenced as Wexler 1999-D 1-cent WDDR-031. Struck in copper-plated zinc, the 1999-D was produced in enormous quantities at Denver during the final years of Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, which would give way to the 2009 bicentennial and 2010 Shield designs.
