1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-027
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1999-D 1¢ WDDR-027 and cross-referenced as CONECA 5-R-VII, this Lincoln Memorial Cent presents doubling that manifests as a bar extending from the bottom of the knee to the upper base below the feet, positioned to the right of the statue on the seventh column of the Lincoln Memorial — a localized architectural doubling feature within the Memorial's columned facade. The die marker documentation reveals two distinct die states: Stage A shows a heavy die gouge below the I in LIBERTY on the obverse and a minute die chip right of the lowermost aspect of column 7 with a die chip left of the roof on the reverse; Stage B shows heavy polishing lines within the folds of Lincoln's jacket on the obverse (indicating die maintenance between stages), while the reverse retains the column 7 die chip and adds a die break at the top of the second memorial column. The transition from Stage A to Stage B, with the appearance of polishing lines on the obverse, documents an intervening die maintenance event where the obverse die was polished during its service life, altering the surface texture in the jacket area while the structural die chip on the reverse persisted through both states. Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, with its detailed twelve-column facade and seated Lincoln statue, provides the architectural reference framework against which column-specific doubling can be precisely located. Struck at the Denver Mint in 1999 in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter, the CONECA 5-R-VII designation classifies this as a Class VII (Modified Hub Doubling) variety — the fifth reverse variety in its classification group for this date and mint.
