1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-022
Error
Description
An anomalous slanted bar extending from the bottom of the Lincoln statue's hand to the middle of its knee, positioned to the left of the sixth column, distinguishes this 1999 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse from other DDR varieties for the date. Cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1999-D 1-cent WDDR-022, this bar-type doubling on the Memorial columns is characteristic of how misaligned hub impressions interact with the fine architectural detail of Frank Gasparro's reverse design. The obverse die marker is a die chip below the E of LIBERTY, while the reverse carries two confirming markers: a die chip below the I of UNITED and another below the right side of the E of ONE. No other cross-references are known for this variety. Twenty-two documented doubled die reverses for the 1999-D date reflects the extraordinary volume of research applied to late-1990s Lincoln Cents, when production at Denver exceeded billions of coins and the number of die pairs consumed per year reached historic highs. The Memorial's columned facade acts as a natural magnifier for hub misalignment because the thin vertical columns and statue details reveal even tiny positional shifts between hubbing impressions. The 1999-D was among the final dates of the Memorial reverse series before the 2009 bicentennial redesign.
