1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-021

Description

Manifesting as a slanted bar extending from the upper arm to the hand to the right of the statue on the seventh column, WDDR-021 presents a distinctive doubled die reverse on the 1999-D Lincoln Memorial Cent where the Lincoln Memorial's architectural details provide the geometric framework for the spread. The Lincoln Memorial reverse by Frank Gasparro includes a miniature seated Lincoln statue visible between the central columns, and doubling affecting the statue and column areas creates some of the most visually compelling DDR effects in the denomination. Die markers for the reverse include a die chip below the right memorial base, a die chip above the left cornice, and a die chip between the upper F of OF and the first A of AMERICA, while no significant obverse markers were noted. These three reverse die chips provide a reliable constellation of attribution points. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1999-D 1¢ WDDR-021, the Denver origin confirms this was a circulation-strike die rather than a proof issue. Twenty-one DDRs for a single Denver date reflects both the enormous late-1990s cent production volumes and the systematic examination of Denver mint-marked cents by variety researchers.
