Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1999-D 1c WDDR-017 with no other known cross-references, this Lincoln Memorial Cent variety presents a distinctive doubled design element on the reverse: a double slanted bar extends from the elbow to the upper knee to the right of the statue on the seventh column. This diagnostic targets the tiny seated Lincoln figure within the Memorial building's central bay, where hub doubling has produced a secondary impression of the statue's arm that appears as an additional slanted bar connecting the elbow region to the upper knee area — a specific and locatable anomaly that gives this variety a clear visual identity among the numerous 1999-D DDR entries. Obverse die markers include a die chip between the lower first and second nines of the date, providing a rapid confirmation point on the portrait side. The reverse carries multiple markers: two small die chips below and between the I and T of UNITED, and a die chip to the right of the bottom of the second A of AMERICA. These reverse markers, combined with the statue-specific doubling, create a three-zone attribution framework (statue area, UNITED area, AMERICA area) that enables high-confidence identification. The 1999-D cent was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper plating) at 2.5 grams and 19 mm diameter. Denver's substantial 1999 cent production generated a deep pool of documented DDR varieties, and WDDR-017's statue limb doubling places it in the subcategory of Memorial Cent varieties where the Lincoln figure within the building serves as the primary diagnostic zone — a feature that requires magnification to appreciate given the miniature scale of the seated president on the reverse design.
