Description

Presenting as a bar extending from the elbow to the upper knee to the left of the statue within the sixth column of the Lincoln Memorial, this twelfth Wexler-attributed doubled die reverse for the 1999 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent shows doubling in the architectural details of the Memorial reverse. Die markers on the reverse include a die chip to the left of the E of AMERICA, a die chip on the right memorial base, and a die chip within the upper second memorial bay, providing multiple secondary diagnostics for attribution. No notable obverse die markers are documented. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1999-D 1 cent WDDR-012, the bar-like doubling near the statue within the Memorial colonnade represents a characteristic location for detectable doubling on Gasparro's Memorial reverse, where the tiny statue and surrounding columns offer fine design elements that reveal hub displacement. The 1999-D Lincoln Cent was produced in the final year before the Lincoln Bicentennial program was conceived, and Denver struck enormous quantities of cents during this period. Twelve documented doubled die reverses for a single date and mint demonstrates the depth of die variety research on late-era Memorial Cents, where advanced imaging tools enable detection of doubling in the minute Memorial interior details that are nearly invisible to the unaided eye.
