Description

Hub doubling on WDDR-006 presents as a bar extending from the middle of the knee downward to the upper base below the feet, positioned to the left of the statue on the sixth column of the Lincoln Memorial reverse. Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1999-D 1¢ WDDR-006, this variety differs from the companion WDDR-005 for the same date in both the specific column affected and the location of the doubling relative to the statue. No obverse die markers were noted for this die pair. The reverse carries three diagnostic die chips: one at the bottom left of the I in AMERICA, another to the lower left of the O in ONE, and a third positioned northeast of the G in the designer's initials FG. These three chip locations form a triangulation pattern across the reverse field that reliably identifies this specific reverse die. Denver's 1999 cent production exceeded 6.3 billion pieces, an output level that demanded hundreds of individual die pairs working in rotation across multiple coining presses. Within that enormous volume, each DDR listing represents output from a single reverse die, making documented varieties a tiny fraction of the total mintage. The Memorial's interior details -- columns, statue, steps, and structural elements -- function as a magnifying lens for hub doubling detection, since even minor misalignment between hub impressions gets expressed across the numerous parallel architectural lines. WDDR-006 is a solid example of how column-area doubling provides some of the most visually compelling diagnostics in the entire Memorial cent DDR census.
