Description

Medium spread slightly rotated clockwise producing an extra column number seven from hand to shin height distinguishes this fourth cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1999-D Lincoln Memorial Cent. The Memorial reverse by Frank Gasparro features twelve columns across the front facade, and column-level doubling creates one of the most visually distinctive DDR effects in the series — a ghost column appearing beside the original. VarietyVista cataloged this variety under UVC-2975 and DMR-005 with three die stages: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in Early Die State, while Stage B (MDS) and Stage C (LDS) remain unconfirmed. The clockwise rotational component means the doubled image does not simply shadow in one direction but follows a slight arc, producing spread that varies in magnitude depending on distance from the rotation center. Denver's 1999 cent production was substantial, contributing billions of pennies to a circulation pool that also included the first year of State Quarters — a program that redirected some public attention away from cent collecting. The medium strength of the spread and the dramatic visual of an extra column make DDR-004 one of the more collectible Lincoln Memorial DDRs from the late 1990s Denver output.
