Description

Documented by VarietyVista as UVC-2954 with DMR-003, this 1999 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent displays light westward spread manifesting as an extra column number 7 spanning from the hand down to the foot of the seated Lincoln statue within the Memorial. Three die stages document the die's progression: Stage A with both reverse and obverse at early die state, Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The 1999-D cent was struck at Denver's facility during the year when the State Quarters program launched, drawing enormous public attention to circulating coinage and spurring many collectors to examine their change more carefully than ever before. Denver produced approximately 6.36 billion cents in 1999, one of the highest annual cent outputs in Mint history, generating a vast number of die pairs. The hand-to-foot column doubling on column 7 provides a full-length extra column image adjacent to the statue, a classic Memorial cent doubled die presentation first made famous by the dramatic 1969-S DDO and 1972 DDO but recurring in subtler forms throughout the series. Light spread means the extra column sits close to the primary, requiring careful examination under magnification of 5x or greater. The 1999-D date marked one of the final years of the Memorial reverse era, which would end after the 2008 production run.
