1998 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-026
Error
Description
Carrying dual cross-references to Coppercoins 1998P-1DR-013 and Wexler Variety ID 1998 1¢ WDDR-026, this doubled die reverse on the 1998 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent presents doubling on two of the Memorial's twelve columns: the lower right side of the 6th column to the left of the lower statue, and the lower left side of the 7th column to the right of the lower statue. This mirrored positioning — affecting adjacent columns on opposite sides of the seated Lincoln figure — maps the hub displacement vector with precision, as the doubling on column 6 (showing on its right side) and column 7 (showing on its left side) indicates the secondary impression displaced in a direction that pushed extra material outward from the statue's center along these flanking columns. The Coppercoins cross-reference (1998P-1DR-013) connects this variety to one of the earliest comprehensive online databases of Lincoln Cent die varieties, which predated and complemented the Wexler attribution system. No significant obverse die markers were noted. On the reverse, two die gouges provide attribution fingerprints: one to the right of the bottom of the I in UNITED and another to the right of the second A in AMERICA. These reverse gouges sit in the upper inscription band above the Memorial design, positioned far enough from the columnar doubling to serve as independent confirmation points. The 1998-P Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck in copper-plated zinc composition at 2.5 grams, during the middle years of the Memorial reverse's copper-plated zinc era. Examination at 7x to 10x magnification of columns 6 and 7, flanking the seated Lincoln statue, will reveal the characteristic column-edge doubling.
