Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1998 1¢ WDDR-020, this 1998 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse shows doubling to the right of the statue's left leg within the Memorial design. Several distinctive die markers aid in authentication. On the reverse, a die gouge appears to the right of the T in UNITED, another to the right of the upper second A in AMERICA, a small die gouge sits to the right of the bottom of the 12th column, and two die gouges are positioned above the F in the FG designer initials. The obverse is noted in early die state with no specific markers recorded. Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, with its intricate colonnade and tiny seated Lincoln figure, provided numerous areas where subtle hub doubling could manifest — the statue, columns, and fine architectural details all served as diagnostic targets. Late 1990s Lincoln Cent production at Philadelphia ran into the billions annually, and the sheer volume of dies consumed ensured a steady stream of doubled die discoveries for variety specialists examining rolls and bags from this era.
