Description
The 1997 (W) Jackie Robinson Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. With a mintage of just 5,174, this is a scarce issue sought by specialists. The gold coin companion to the Jackie Robinson silver dollar, this $5 piece portrays Robinson beyond baseball — as a civil rights advocate and business leader who continued fighting for equality after his retirement from the sport in 1956. The obverse features a portrait of Robinson in his later years as a civil rights leader and political activist, while the reverse displays a baseball design with Robinson's life dates '1919-1972' and the inscription 'Legacy of Courage'. Designed by William C. Cousins/James Peed. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9759. With an extremely low mintage of just 5,174 uncirculated and 24,072 proof coins, the Jackie Robinson $5 gold is one of the rarest modern commemorative gold issues and commands significant premiums.
