1997-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
On the Lincoln Memorial reverse, the 1997-D Lincoln Cent DDR-003 displays light spread in the West direction manifesting as an extra partial column #7 — the westernmost column of the Memorial facade. The secondary column image extends from hand level down to shin level, covering the upper-to-middle portion of the column shaft. West-direction spread pushes the ghost column to the left of the primary, and the partial hand-to-shin extent distinguishes DDR-003 from full-length column doublings that span the entire column. Three die stages document the die's working life: Stage A records both reverse and obverse in Early Die State, while Stage B at Mid Die State and Stage C at Late Die State remain unconfirmed, suggesting fewer specimens have been examined at those later stages. The Denver Mint struck Lincoln cents in copper-plated zinc during 1997, and high production volumes consumed many working dies. Column #7 West varieties are the most frequently cataloged spread direction on Memorial cent DDRs because rotational hub displacement tends to produce maximum visible separation at the facade's leftmost edge.
