Description

Second doubled die reverse cataloged for the 1997 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent by VarietyVista, this variety shows a medium spread West as an extra partial column number 7 running from hand to shin of the Lincoln statue. Die markers UVC-2958 and DMR-003 define the variety, with Stage A notably showing both the reverse and obverse in early-to-mid die state (EMDS) — a designation between EDS and MDS indicating the die had seen moderate use but was not yet exhibiting advanced deterioration when the earliest documented specimens were struck. Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) remain unconfirmed. The EMDS designation is relatively unusual in VarietyVista's staging system and provides additional precision about when in the die's working life collectors can expect to find this variety. Column number 7 in the Lincoln Memorial design lies to the right of the seated Lincoln statue, and its thin vertical profile makes it a sensitive indicator of East-West hub displacement. The 1997-D cent was produced at the Denver Mint during the late Modern Clad Era, when annual cent production volumes ran into the hundreds of millions. As the second documented DDR for 1997-D, this variety pairs with DDR-001 to begin the documented catalog, though additional DDRs for this date may exist in later sequences cataloged in separate batches.
