Description

The 1996 (W) Proof Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games Commemorative Five Dollar Gold - Cauldron is a proof commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. With a mintage of 38,555, this is a scarce commemorative issue. Part of the Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games program, this $5 gold coin depicts the dramatic moment when the Olympic cauldron is lit. The obverse features an athlete lighting the Olympic cauldron with the torch, with 'USA' and five Olympic rings beneath, while the reverse displays the Atlanta Olympic logo flanked by laurel leaves. Designed by Frank Gasparro/William Krawczewicz. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9739. The cauldron $5 gold commemorates the most dramatic moment of the 1996 Olympics — forever associated with Muhammad Ali's trembling but determined lighting of the flame.
