Unlike most spiked head varieties that project upward from the crown, this 1996 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter features a die crack that enters Washington's neck and runs along the base of the neck, producing the raised spike effect that characterizes this popular variety class. The Cuds on Coins catalog note specifies the crack path: rather than originating at the top of Washington's head (the most common spike location), this die crack enters from the neck area and follows the contour of the neck base, creating an unusual trajectory that distinguishes it from the typical upward-projecting spikes. Die cracks form along lines of stress in the hardened die steel, and the neck area — where the relatively deep portrait cavity transitions to the shallower field — represents a natural stress concentration point during striking. As the die crack widens through continued use, planchet metal flows into the widening fissure, building up a raised ridge on each struck coin. The 1996 Philadelphia Mint produced quarters in large volume as part of the final years of the standard Washington Quarter design before the State Quarters program began in 1999, and the high production rates accelerated die fatigue.
