Description

The 1995 (W) Proof Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games Commemorative Five Dollar Gold - Stadium is a proof commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. With a mintage of 43,124, this is a scarce commemorative issue. Part of the Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games program, this $5 gold coin features the 85,000-seat Centennial Olympic Stadium, which after the Games was converted into Turner Field for the Atlanta Braves baseball team. The obverse features an overhead view of the Olympic Stadium planned for the 1996 Games in Atlanta, with the Olympic Games logo, while the reverse displays the Olympic flame rising from a cauldron with thirteen stars representing the original colonies. Designed by Marcel Jovine/Frank Gasparro. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9735. The stadium $5 gold offers a unique aerial perspective rarely seen on U.S. coinage and documents a structure that was later transformed for a different sporting purpose.
