Description

Sharing a vintage year with the famous 1995 doubled die reverse Lincoln Cent — one of the most celebrated modern die varieties — this WDDR-001 reversed doubled die has been somewhat overshadowed by its obverse counterpart but carries its own set of distinctive diagnostic features. Extra thickness appears on the designer's initials FG (Frank Gasparro), while a close spread towards the center shows on the right Memorial base, and a distinctive notch is visible on the bottom left of the second A in AMERICA. Reverse die markers include a small die gouge between the lower T and E in UNITED and a die scratch inside the top of the R in AMERICA — precise positional diagnostics that facilitate confident attribution. The obverse shows no significant noted markers, meaning die identification relies primarily on the reverse characteristics. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1995 1¢ WDDR-001 with no additional cross-references, this variety is part of the Lincoln Memorial Cent series that spanned 1959 through 2008. The 1995 Philadelphia Mint produced approximately 6.41 billion cents, a massive output that consumed vast numbers of working dies.
