1995 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
While the 1995 Lincoln Memorial cent is most famous for its dramatic doubled die reverse — one of the most well-known modern error coins — the reverse of this date also produced documented doubled dies. DDR-002 shows strong spread on the Lincoln Memorial building, rotated slightly counterclockwise (CCW), manifesting as an extra ceiling line and column in bay #7 of the Memorial's colonnade. This architectural doubling transforms a specific section of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse design, adding a phantom structural element that mirrors the genuine ceiling line and column at a slight offset. Philadelphia struck this issue, with VarietyVista cataloging the die as UVC-3066 and die marriage DMR-006. The strong classification means the extra ceiling line and column should be visible under moderate magnification without specialized lighting — the architectural geometry of the Memorial provides clean reference lines that make any additional elements immediately apparent. Bay #7 refers to the seventh intercolumnar space counting from one end of the Memorial facade, a specific location that collectors can identify by counting the columns on the reverse. The CCW rotational component explains why the doubling concentrates in a particular bay rather than affecting the entire building uniformly: the rotation pivot placed bay #7 at the optimal distance for accumulating visible angular displacement.
