Description

Previously listed as WDDR-014, this variety was renumbered to WDDR-005 during the wavy steps reclassification and carries Crawford cross-reference CDDR-007. The steady march of renumbered entries — 011 becoming 002, 012 becoming 003, 013 becoming 004, and now 014 becoming 005 — reveals the magnitude of the reclassification: at least nine of the original thirteen lowest-numbered WDDR entries for 1993-D were either wavy steps varieties that were removed or minor varieties that were delisted, leaving the legitimate doubled dies to fill the vacated slots in sequence. This systematic renumbering preserved the Wexler catalog's convention of assigning consecutive numbers without gaps, but it created a research challenge: any pre-reclassification reference, auction record, or attribution label bearing a 1993-D WDDR number between 001 and 010 likely refers to a variety that no longer exists under that designation or has been reclassified as a trail die. The Crawford CDDR numbering, which was not affected by the Wexler reclassification, provides the most stable identifier for tracking this variety across the two cataloging eras. For collectors, WDDR-005 represents a confirmed hub doubling variety that survived the rigorous re-examination that eliminated the wavy steps entries. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
