1993-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Carrying the richest die marker documentation of any 1993-D doubled die reverse, WDDR-004 — formerly WDDR-013, now cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-006 — exhibits extra columns in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and tenth Memorial bays, making it one of the more visually dramatic varieties in this date's census. The spread of doubling across five bays, including the tenth bay far to the right of center, indicates a displacement vector that affected a wide swath of the Memorial facade rather than concentrating on a single architectural element. The die markers documented for this reverse are exceptionally detailed: a scratch extends from the area of the first column diagonally to the N in UNITED, another scratch runs between the S and T of STATES, a vertical scratch rises above the O of OF, parallel scratches appear below the left base near the O of ONE, a vertical scratch descends through the bottom of the third bay, and numerous horizontal scratches cross through the Memorial bays. This density of surface markers provides multiple independent attribution checkpoints — even if wear or environmental damage obscures some markers, the sheer number of documented features means confirmation remains possible from the survivors. The obverse die markers have not been fully documented, reflecting the reverse-centric focus of doubled die reverse attribution. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge. Reverse: A die scratch runs WNW from the top of the 1st column to the N in UNITED. A die scratch runs from NW to SE between the tops of the S and T in STATES. A vertical die scratch can be found above the O in OF. Two parallel and nearly horizontal die scratches can be found below the left base of the Memorial and to the left of the top of the O in ONE. A vertical die scratch can be found at the bottom of the 3rd Memorial bay. Numerous other horizontal die scratches run through the Memorial bays.
