Description
The 1992 (W) Christopher Columbus Quincentenary Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. With a mintage of 24,329, this is a scarce commemorative issue. The gold coin in the 1992 Columbus Quincentenary program, this $5 piece features Columbus gazing toward the Americas he helped connect to Europe. The obverse features a profile portrait of Columbus facing left toward an outline map of North and South America, while the reverse displays the crest of the Admiral of the Ocean Sea above an Old World nautical chart dated 1492. Designed by T. James Ferrell/Thomas D. Rogers. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9666. The Columbus $5 gold combines a classical portrait with nautical symbolism, making it one of the more elegant designs in the modern gold commemorative series.
