Description

Among the most architecturally dramatic doubled dies for the 1991 Philadelphia cent, WDDR-004 creates the illusion of extra columns appearing in the first two Memorial bays — the spaces between the leftmost columns of the Lincoln Memorial. This effect occurs when the secondary hubbing impression shifts column elements into the open bay areas, filling spaces that should be empty with ghost-like vertical lines. Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-002, this variety is independently cataloged in Billy G. Crawford's doubled die attribution system, providing collectors with a second verification pathway. A gouge above E in LIBERTY and gouges in both nines of the 1991 date mark the obverse die, while a die scratch running from the Memorial roof through the first U of UNUM and the P of PLURIBUS traces a distinctive diagonal path across the reverse. The extra-column effect in the Memorial bays makes WDDR-004 one of the more visually striking varieties in the nine-entry 1991 Philadelphia doubled die reverse series. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm. Die Markers: Obverse: A die gouge can be found above the E in LIBERTY. A small die gouge can be found inside the upper loop of the 1st 9. Reverse: A die scratch extends north from the roof of the Memorial through the left side of the 1st U of UNUM and the right side of the P of PLURIBUS.
