Description
The 1988 (W) Seoul Olympiad Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 62,913 examples. The gold coin in the 1988 Seoul Olympiad program, this $5 piece features a classical depiction of Nike as Liberty. The obverse features nike, the Greek goddess of victory, depicted in a two-thirds profile wearing a crown and draped garment, representing Liberty, while the reverse displays a stylized Olympic flame with the five Olympic rings above. Designed by Elizabeth Jones/Marcel Jovine. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9630. The Seoul Olympiad $5 gold is notable for its classical aesthetic, with Nike rendered in a style reminiscent of ancient Greek coinage.
