Description
The 1987 (W) Proof United States Constitution Bicentennial Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a proof commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. Total mintage reached 651,659. The gold coin companion to the 1987 Constitution silver dollar, this $5 piece was authorized to celebrate the bicentennial of the U.S. The obverse features a stylized eagle in profile with wings raised, holding a quill pen in its talons, with rays of sun emanating from behind, while the reverse displays a large vertical quill pen behind the calligraphic words 'We the People,' with nine stars on the left representing the first states to ratify and four on the right for the remaining original states. Designed by Marcel Jovine. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9627. The Constitution $5 gold is notable for its bold modern design and remains one of the most popular gold commemoratives from the 1980s era.
