Description

Classified as Class II spread toward the center, WDDR-003 on the 1985 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent shows doubling on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE CENT, and Gasparro's initials, with the strongest spread on AMERICA. The Class II designation indicates the doubling resulted from a rotated hub impression — a pivoting displacement during hubbing that produces varying spread depending on each element's distance from the rotation axis. Elements near the center show minimal spread while those further out show progressively stronger doubling, explaining why AMERICA displays the most prominent effect. Obverse markers include a short die scratch north-northeast from the lower right of the G in GOD. Reverse diagnostics feature a gouge between the lower A and second T in STATES, a gouge through the bottom of Lincoln's statue, and a short gouge from the lower left of the C in CENT. The statue gouge is unusual — damage to the Lincoln figure within the Memorial is less commonly documented than inscription or architectural markers. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from the 1985 mintage of approximately 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985 1¢ WDDR-003). Reverse: A die gouge can be found between the lower A and 2nd T in STATES. A die gouge runs through the bottom of the statue. A short die gouge protrudes from the lower left of the C in CENT.
