Description

Showing a spread towards the center on ONE CENT, the United States of America inscription, and designer Frank Gasparro's initials, WDDR-002 on the 1985 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent affects a broader range of reverse elements than the AMERICA-focused WDDR-001. The obverse die is heavily scratched: two parallel scratches through the upper 9, a horizontal scratch through TY in LIBERTY, two parallel scratches northeast from the G in GOD, and numerous additional scratches too extensive to enumerate. This obverse scratching serves as a comprehensive attribution fingerprint linking the obverse die to this particular doubled reverse. Reverse markers include a small gouge protruding from the lower left of the C in CENT and a short horizontal gouge left of the first Memorial column top. The centerward spread on ONE CENT is particularly useful for cherry-picking, as these large, centrally positioned letters are easily examined on circulated specimens. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from Philadelphia's 1985 production of approximately 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985 1¢ WDDR-002). Die Markers: Obverse: Two parallel die scratches run from NW to SE through the upper 9. A nearly horizontal die scratch runs through the center of the TY in LIBERTY. Two parallel die scratches run NE from the right side of the G in GOD. Numerous other die scratches, too many to list here, can be found throughout the obverse. Reverse: A small die gouge protrudes from the lower left side of the C in CENT. A short, horizontal die gouge can be found to the left of the top of the first Memorial column.
