1985 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
The first of three doubled die reverses cataloged by the Wexler Team for the 1985 Philadelphia cent, WDDR-001 exhibits extra thickness on AMERICA along with notching and separation lines — telltale visual signatures of hub doubling where the secondary impression creates stepped or split-line effects within the lettering. Documentation notes that an earlier die state may show more pronounced doubling, suggesting the recorded specimen is from a stage where die wear has partially obscured the spread. Obverse markers include two die gouge dots in the field below IN and behind Lincoln's head. The reverse is in late die state (LDS) with no significant markers beyond the doubling itself — the LDS designation means the die had seen considerable use, accounting for the softened effect. Locating an earlier die state specimen would likely reveal the AMERICA lettering with more dramatic doubling and better-defined separation lines. No cross-references to CONECA or other catalogs have been established. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from the 1985 mintage of approximately 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985 1¢ WDDR-001).
