1984 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010
ErrorDescription
Rounding out the Wexler doubled die reverse series as the tenth and final entry for the 1984 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDR-010 shows slight spread towards center on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and slightly on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The qualifying "slightly" on the motto distinguishes this as a variety where displacement was not uniform: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA received enough offset for confident attribution, while E PLURIBUS UNUM falls at the threshold of detectability. The obverse die carries a small gouge appearing as a dot on the front of the vest left of the bottom 1 in the date — a precise marker facilitating rapid confirmation. Reverse die markers include a small gouge below the O in OF, a gouge below TE in UNITED, and numerous west-to-east scratches throughout the reverse. The parallel orientation of these reverse scratches suggests systematic contact rather than random handling marks. No known cross references. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from the 1984 production of over 8.15 billion cents. Die Markers: Obverse: A small die gouge (dot) can be found on the front of the vest to the left of the bottom of the one in the date. Reverse: A small die gouge can be found below the O in OF. A die gouge can be found below the TE in UNITED. Numerous die scratches run mostly W/E throughout the reverse.
