1984 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
ErrorDescription
Requiring patient magnification to confirm, 1984 1-cent WDDR-008 under the Wexler system records slight spread towards center on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the designer's initials on the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. The "slight" classification positions this variety among the more delicate doubled die reverses for the date, demanding careful examination to distinguish genuine hub doubling from die deterioration or strike doubling. On the obverse, a scratch runs east-northeast from the top of the I through the top of the N in IN, accompanied by numerous southwest-to-northeast scratches suggesting mechanical contact during die handling. The reverse carries a small gouge between the upper E in ONE and the upper C in CENT, situated precisely where the denomination displays the doubled die effect — a convenient landmark for attributors. No known cross references. Produced at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from the 1984 mintage exceeding 8.15 billion cents. Die Markers: Obverse: A die scratch runs ENE from the top of the I through the top of the N of IN. Numerous die scratches running mostly SW/NE can be found to the left and to the right of the bust. Reverse: A small die gouge can be found between the upper E in ONE and the upper C in CENT.
