Description

Strongest on the denomination, 1984 1-cent WDDR-005 under the Wexler system presents spread towards center on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE CENT, and the designer's initials on the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, with the most pronounced doubling concentrated on the ONE CENT lettering. The gradient of intensity — strongest on ONE CENT and progressively less pronounced on the surrounding legends — reflects the geometry of the hub misalignment, with the greatest displacement occurring at or near the center-bottom of the reverse where ONE CENT is positioned. This makes the denomination text the primary diagnostic zone for cherrypickers seeking this variety, as the doubling there is more readily apparent than on the upper legends where the effect diminishes. Light southwest-to-northeast scratches mark the obverse die, while northwest-to-southeast scratches characterize the reverse, providing secondary diagnostics for die-pair confirmation.
