Description

Distinguished by heavy die abrasion on both working dies, Wexler's 1984 1-cent WDDR-004 shows extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE CENT, and the designer's initials, with notches on the lower A letters and the R in AMERICA on the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. What sets this variety apart is the condition of the dies: both obverse and reverse were heavily abraded, indicating aggressive die maintenance during the die's service life. On the obverse, numerous vertical scratches pass through 84 in the date, a strong scratch runs south-southeast from the T in LIBERTY, and additional scratches appear throughout. The reverse shows widespread abrasion with a gouge between the upper N and T in CENT. Despite the polishing, enough doubling evidence survived on the reverse inscriptions to permit confident attribution. The abrasion underscores the demanding production environment at Philadelphia during 1984, when over 8.15 billion cents were struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams. No known cross references. Die Markers: Obverse: The obverse die has been heavily abraded with numerous vertical die scratches running through the 84 in the date. A strong die scratch runs SSE from the bottom of the T in LIBERTY. Numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse. Reverse: The reverse die has been heavily abraded with many die scratches throughout the reverse. A die gouge can be found between the upper N and T in CENT.
