1984 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Featuring a rich array of doubling indicators, Wexler's 1984 1-cent WDDR-003 exhibits extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM, with separation lines on the U of UNITED and the E and P of E PLURIBUS UNUM, plus notches on the lower A letters and the R in AMERICA on the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. The separation lines on U, E, and P — where fine secondary edges parallel the primary letter strokes — mark the clearest zones of displacement, while the notches on the lower A's and R indicate the hub offset carved small steps into the serif regions of those letters. This combination of extra thickness, separation lines, and notches across two different legend groups documents a doubling event strong enough to leave multiple types of evidence but not dramatic enough to produce full separation. Obverse die markers include a short gouge extending from the rim above the right O in GOD. On the reverse, scratches appear above the statue's right shoulder, and vertical scratches run to the right of the lower N in ONE. Designated Wexler 1984 1-cent WDDR-003, with no known cross references. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams. Die Markers: Obverse: A short die gouge extends from the rim above the right side of the O in GOD. Reverse: Die scratches can be found above the statue’s right shoulder.
