Description

Completing the Wexler doubled die reverse census for 1983 at four entries, WDDR-004 documents doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE CENT on the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. Designated Wexler WDDR-004 with no additional cross-references, this variety carries a reverse die with particularly rich structural failure diagnostics. The obverse shows a light die clash at the throat and two short die scratches oriented southwest-northeast below the bowtie. The reverse exhibits three distinct die cracks: one running from the rim going southeast between the T and E of UNITED and touching the E, another from the rim to the Memorial crossing the right leg of the R in AMERICA, and a third from the rim to the lower left Memorial base. Additionally, a collar clash is visible running through TES and OF in STATES OF — a collar clash occurs when the collar die (which forms the coin's edge) contacts the working die at an improper angle, leaving linear impressions of the collar's edge across the die face. The combination of multiple die cracks, a collar clash, and a die clash on the obverse indicates this die pair accumulated substantial damage from several distinct types of production mishaps during its service life, making WDDR-004 one of the most diagnostically complex varieties in the 1983 doubled die reverse sequence.
