Description

Manifesting as extra thickness and separation lines rather than the dramatic spread of WDDR-001, WDDR-002 produces its doubling on CENT, the designer's initials, the lower right Memorial, and some letters in AMERICA on the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. Designated Wexler WDDR-002 with no additional cross-references, this variety represents a close-tolerance hubbing misalignment where the secondary impression falls near enough to the primary that it creates thickened strokes and fine separation lines rather than boldly doubled images. The obverse carries no significant die markers, placing attribution focus entirely on the reverse. The reverse exhibits rotational die scratches on the Memorial centered at the statue of Lincoln — a circular pattern suggesting rotational polishing or lapping during die finishing. Additional reverse markers include a die gouge under the upper left T in UNITED, a die scratch running from the center of E in CENT east-southeast through N in CENT, and die cracks extending from both the left and right Memorial base tips to the rim. These bilateral die cracks indicate symmetric structural failure at the two points of greatest stress along the Memorial's base, and their presence alongside the hub doubling provides multiple independent attribution markers.
