Description

Second in the VarietyVista doubled die reverse sequence for 1982 Philadelphia, DDR-002 displays medium spread and extra thickness on STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, CENT, and the designer's initials FG (Frank Gasparro). The doubling affects a wide swath of reverse legends and design details, though at "medium" rather than "strong" intensity, distinguishing it from the FS-listed DDR-001. This variety appears on the copper (bronze) Large Date subtype, with obverse die ODV-031 confirming the large date punch style. Die markers UVC-3027 and DMR-008 identify the specific die marriage. The copper composition places DDR-002 within the pre-transition phase of 1982 production, when Philadelphia was still using the 95% copper, 5% zinc alloy at 3.1 grams. Where DDR-001 appears on the zinc Small Date, DDR-002's pairing with the bronze Large Date means these two varieties come from entirely different production streams — different planchet stock, different date punches, and necessarily different working dies. This separation underscores the complexity of the 1982 production year, where doubled die varieties can appear across any of the four Philadelphia subtypes. Attribution by VarietyVista.
