Description
The 1980 (S) Proof Susan B. Anthony Dollar is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Susan B. Anthony Dollars 1979-1999 series. With a mintage of 3.6 million, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 4 mint variants, representing only 4% of total production. The obverse features Susan B. Anthony facing right, the first woman depicted on a U.S. circulating coin and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon, adapted from the Apollo 11 mission patch. Production dropped sharply as the coin's unpopularity became evident. Vending machine operators were among the few advocates for continued production. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $15. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #99592.
