1980 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed as the first documented doubled die reverse for the 1980 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, the WDDR-001 records hub doubling visible on the reverse design elements where a misalignment between the hub and working die during the hubbing process produced secondary impressions of the Memorial design. Doubled die reverse varieties on Lincoln Memorial cents tend to receive less collector attention than their obverse counterparts — the intricate architectural detail of the Lincoln Memorial provides numerous small elements where doubling can manifest, but the visual impact is often subtler than the bold letter and date separation seen on obverse doubled dies like the famous WDDO-001 from the same date. Die markers for this variety are documented on the obverse, where die scratches run from north-northwest to south-southeast to the left of the 1 and the 9 in the date. The reverse carries no significant additional die markers beyond the doubling itself. The relative scarcity of documented die markers suggests either that the die was pulled from service relatively early or that detailed multi-stage die state tracking has not yet been completed for this variety. The 1980 Philadelphia cent was the first year to bear the P mintmark on cents, struck from the standard 95% copper alloy.
